Professor Karen Karavanic was awarded a $100k PSU Sustainability Miller Grant for her research proposal "Sustainable High Performance Computing: Integrating Power and Cooling Data with Application and System Performance for Linux Clusters." A single large data center or laboratory currently consumes as much electricity as a small U.S. city; the researchers are developing new software techniques to reduce this cost of computing at the high end. Karavanic and her students in the High Performance Computing Lab are collaborating with Dr. Andres Marquez of Pacific Northwest Laboratory's Energy Smart Data Center.
