Computer science Ph.D. student Candy Yiu won third prize in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) student research competition in conjunction with the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, held in Keystone, Colorado on October 1-4, 2008. The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. The title of Candy Yiu's award winning research is "Architecture for 60 GHz High Speed Wireless Networks". Candy will compete in the ACM Grand Finals next spring. The research describes an architecture that uses smart antennas along with a novel nulling method and static spatial channels in the 60GHz ISM band to provide high speed wireless access in indoor environments. Candy's research is part of a National Science Foundation funded project on Wireless Networking whose principal investigator is Dr. Suresh Singh.
